At MisFits, we prioritize delivering hands-on education taught by real-world experts. We believe in the unmatched value of practical knowledge over textbook teachings.
This Program is deisgned for thos who want to focus on efficiencies - and are tired for traditional learning style of pen and paper. The learning is driven in case style format - and hovers around building conjectures. MisFitters are trained to make conjectures to things that may not even know of via focsusing on foundations. The reason is tehre is no end to cramming facts, and information - the beauty lies in levenraing the analytical skillsets to make eobjectures around history, geography, economiy, international affaris, Envirnoemnt. These methodsare designed to
Appearing for UPSC Prelims exam in 2025, 2026, 2027, or 2028 - and want to get into the IFS in the first attempt.
Misfits will be contrarian in its approach - when the rest of the institutes give you endless notes or 'study' material. MisFits will focus on building foundations that will ensure that you are a better learner. You will also be required to complete the readings of mandatory booklist.
There will be no 'crash course', or 'capsule' course, or '360 degree Prelims' course. Why? Because you can't get into top 100 ranks with such non-sense.
If you can complete every single lecture diligently (be it LIVE or recorded) - you will be armed with all the skill-sets to crack this exam.
There is NO SUBSCRIPTION plan at MisFits. Because we want you to clear this exam in one go. But for those who want to appear in 2027 - you will ALWAYS have access to recording.
You are College Student - who is flirting with the idea of preparing for UPSC Civil Services
At MisFits resources will be minimal. Because in the UPSC Market - there's an overflow of a lot of information. Sadly, most of the information is substandard and irrelevant. Studying through those resources will give you a 'false sense' of completing the syllabus - but in reality, you'd be wasting your time with substandard material, and unscientific rote memorization.
There are 2 reasons why you should start preparing for the IFS in the first year of your college.
1. It will enhance your chances of getting selected at the age of 22, or 23. Most of the senior ranked positions in the Government of India are basis the number of years you spend in the Government. An early entry into the Civil Services will be one of the ways to ensure that you enjoy the perks of the services.
2. You will be less likely to be burdened with family responsibilities. The less pressure scenario will benefit you in your final exams. Also, there is always compounded learning benefits - as you start early.
You are a working professional who can't quit your job.
(There are many who can NOT afford to quit their jobs. And in many cases, it is actually a good thing for UPSC preparation.
With job comes confidence, and this confidence also gets reflected in the Prelims, Mains, and Interviews.
You can quote examples from your work in your essays, ethics, and even in interviews (we will discuss how IFS Fellowship will help you achieve that).
However, with office comes 'office' politics. In such a scenario, it becomes extremely important to focus on efficiencies. How do you achieve efficiency?
1. You minimize inputs : At Misfits - resources will be bare minimum. However, completion and thorough revision of those resources is going to be mandatory. You should be watch recordings multiple times for the next 6 months.
2. You Maximize outputs : You deploy scientifically proven methods that Management Consultants use to advice CEOs and Political Leaders. Leveraging Porter's 5 Forces, Ansoff Matrix, Perceptual Mapping Techniques could increase the output in two ways : 1. It will make you learn and retain things better. 2. It will also improve your scores (via structured analysis of concepts.)
Sadly, no 'standard' 'coaching' institute will cover the aspects of scientific learnings that can 100X your chances to get a rank under 100 in the UPSC exam.

The entire curriculum is segmented into 2 phases with 8 hours lectures/week.
We intake entries on an ongoing rolling (basis availability of seats in our cohort)
There will be NO note taking, or 'study material'. The approach will be contrarian, unique, and practical. The goal is to complete the syllabus well in advance - so that more focus is given to revisions. To get into the IFS, we have to ensure that you get a rank under 100.
Phase 1 will begin from 5th May 2025. The focus of Phase 1 will be on the core aspects of the UPSC Preparation.
The foundational journey would also help IFS Fellows to critically analyze the editorials, news, Podcasts independently.
We expect all MisFitters to study for 4 hours/day on a consistent basis for a period of 1 year. Please note - this needs to be done via deploying the scientific learning methods explained in the reocrded Episodes (assumption that you have zero background in UPSC Preparation)
Phase 1 will cover core components of the UPSC Civil Services - this will include History (Ancient, Medieval, Modern History), Polity, Society, Governance, Geography & Economics.
Reasoning behind Phase 1 :
Many so-called “coaching institutes” make bold claims like “50 questions came directly from our test papers” or “90 questions were from our booklets.” Ignore these distractions. We will make no such claims.
As the exam draws near, you might feel an overwhelming urge to cram every possible fact about the universe, thinking, What if UPSC asks this? But don’t fall into this trap—it’s an endless pursuit.
Your goal should NOT be to know the answer to every single question. Instead, your aim should be to develop the ability to form analytical and logical conjectures.
All the Episodes of Phase 1 are designed to refine that ability. Why? You will never have complete information, no matter how much you study. UPSC questions are designed to test your thinking abilities, not just your memorization skills.
Even if you know the answers to only 35 questions in Prelims, with sharp analytical skills, you can confidently attempt more than 85% of the remaining questions. Logical thinking and informed guesses will be your greatest allies in this journey (Prelims, Mains, and even in the Personality Test).
Phase 1 Focuses on 5 Step Appraoch to the UPSC Preparation :
Step 1: Refine Your Analytical Skillset :
This is the most critical skill you can develop, and unfortunately, it’s often overlooked.
The ability to form logical conjectures is what sets apart individuals at the top—whether they’re at McKinsey, Warren Buffet, or the Ivy Leagues. These people excel because they can make informed decisions with incomplete data.
Similarly, you need to sharpen your ability to analyze, evaluate, and make decisions during the exam. Even when you don’t know all the facts, you should be able to eliminate options and make logical choices.
We’ll dive deeper into this skill in our future classes
Step 2: Read, Analyze, and Question : Watching Recorded Episodes is essential, but don’t stop there—analyze the content. At MisFits, we emphasize questioning, debating, and understanding every idea thoroughly.
Avoid the mistake of turning watching these episodes into a mechanical task where you simply finish chapters or cram facts. Facts will fade over time, and this approach will only increase your anxiety.
This is why we don’t have pre-reads in MisFits. Instead, we focus on analogical thinking, logical conjectures ensuring that you engage with the material meaningfully and critically.
Step 3: Form Independent Opinions : This phase will begin one month into the program with the introduction of the Deep Dive Initiative. Through this, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of how valuable it is to focus on foundational affairs rather than just current affairs.
Many institutes make the mistake of prioritizing rote learning, pushing students to cram endless facts. However, UPSC goes beyond factual knowledge—it tests your ability to connect concepts, analyze critically, and build a strong foundation.
With the Deep Dive Initiative, you’ll learn to approach topics with depth and clarity, enabling you to tackle even the most challenging questions with confidence.
Step 4: Consistency : You won’t develop analytical skills in just a day or two—it’s a gradual process that requires consistent effort over 3-4 months. As you engage with the recorded episodes, you’ll find yourself debating ideas, questioning concepts, and discussing topics more critically.
The recorded sessions are designed to be thought-provoking and immersive. Revisit them as needed to reinforce your understanding and challenge your perspectives.
Mistakes are a natural part of this journey, and that’s okay. With a consistent routine of watching episodes, analyzing content, and forming logical conjectures, you’ll see tremendous growth—not just in your preparation but in how you approach life.
Here’s how to ensure consistency:
Dedicate 4-hour study slots daily to review episodes and reflect on key takeaways.
Ensure your study space is distraction-free—no smartphones or unnecessary interruptions.
Revisit episodes that challenge you until you feel confident in your understanding.
If public speaking or debating isn’t your strength, MisFits is your safe space. Use the discussions within the community to make mistakes, learn, and grow. Ask any “dumb” questions you may have—this is a judgment-free zone where we support each other in arriving at logical conclusions.
Step 5: Prioritize Your Mental Health and Build a Supportive Community
The UPSC journey is long and challenging—you cannot fight every battle alone. Having a strong, supportive community is essential for collaboration, healthy competition, and mutual encouragement.
A supportive environment can help you stay calm, composed, and productive, significantly reducing anxiety. Imagine how much more effective you could be with a clear, focused mind.
At MisFits, we’re introducing Networking Nights for all IFS Fellows, providing an opportunity to connect, share experiences, and learn from each other. We are also considering incorporating meditation sessions to help you stay grounded and centered. If you’d like to volunteer for these initiatives, please write to us, and we’ll happily add you to the team.
Above all, enjoy the journey. If you don’t fall in love with the process of learning, your daily schedule, or the syllabus, it will be difficult to stick to the routine. Find joy in understanding new ideas, forming logical connections, and growing intellectually.
At MisFits, we understand that our pricing might not be considered cheap—it may even be perceived as expensive. We’ve had extensive discussions about this and ultimately realized that we cannot, and will not, compromise on quality to lower costs. Here’s why:
Every episode uploaded to the portal is a masterclass, carefully designed to deliver exceptional value.
The support system, community interactions, and resources like bandwidth allocation for viewing recordings all contribute to delivering a seamless experience.
Additionally, there’s a significant opportunity cost involved with the instructors we bring to MisFits. Our instructors are not just regular teachers—they are practitioners with real-world experience:
They’ve worked with prestigious international organizations like the UN.
They’ve held roles in the Government of India and collaborated with senior leadership across countries like Serbia, North Macedonia, and Albania.
Their expertise comes from firsthand experience, ensuring that you gain insights grounded in practical knowledge, not just theoretical concepts.
Most importantly, our methods have consistently delivered results. This approach—backed by experienced instructors and proven strategies—is what sets MisFits apart from conventional Instittues.
These features come at a significant cost, but they also ensure that we remain accountable to you. If we were to offer highly subsidized services, we’d risk compromising on the quality of content, community, and overall experience—something we’re not willing to do.
At MisFits, quality is non-negotiable.
To ensure transparency and fairness, we’ve introduced a 24-hour, no-questions-asked refund policy. This allows you to go through the episodes, assess the learning style, and see if it aligns with your needs.
As the saying goes, “Cheap choices often cost you twice.” Instead of offering sub-standard services at lower prices, we’ve prioritized giving you the best resources to ensure you succeed in your UPSC journey.

How to Choose Optional Subject for UPSC?
This post is for those who are struggling to choose the right optional subject in the UPSC journey. Save this post, and re-read it.
There are many misconceptions about the optional subjects in the UPSC Civil Services. Here are some of them:
1. Misconception 1: GS is more important than the Optional
For Prelims, this is absolutely true. However, Prelims is only a qualifier. Whether you like it or not, your rank, your services, and your cadre in the civil services will be determined by your performance in the Essay, Optional, and Interviews. While there will be massive averaging in General Studies, the variability in the Essay, Optional, and Interviews will make or break your chances in the exam. Therefore, preparing for the optional subject well in advance makes a lot of sense.
2. Misconception 2: You should choose an optional that you have studied in your graduation
This is pure nonsense. It is totally fine to choose an optional subject that you have not studied in your graduation. Many BA/MA graduates in Political Science and IR have scored much lower marks than those who studied engineering/physics/chemistry/Medicine/Accountancy and still chose PSIR as their optional. Why does this happen?
Candidates from different backgrounds often adopt a more structured and analytical approach to studying new subjects. Success in the UPSC Exam is not just about knowledge but also about exam strategy. Additionally, candidates who have not studied a subject during their graduation might approach a new subject with a fresh perspective, leading to a more analytical and comprehensive understanding of the material.
3. Misconception 3: Choose a specialized optional in Physics, Maths, or Chemistry
It is totally fine if you are in love with these subjects, but ideally, choose an optional that overlaps with the GS papers. You will start appreciating this feature in the two months between your Prelims results and the Mains exam date.
Subjects like PSIR, Public Administration, Geography, and Sociology often cover topics relevant to GS papers. While this might not seem important now, it becomes extremely crucial during the time frame between Prelims and Mains. Additionally, this overlap is advantageous in the interviews as well, as your board will evaluate your performance in your optional subject. They will ask questions around your optional.
At the end of the day, no matter which optional you choose, your goal should be to be among the top 1% of those who chose that optional that year. A subject that you are passionate about will be the subject you will study passionately, which can sustain your interest and drive, leading to better results.
On 29th July, we look forward to starting the journey of Political Science and International Relations at MisFits. This is an optional subject that I have not only studied in theory but also practiced in real life. Our goal is two-fold : number 1 : make you fall in love with that subject, and once that happens, we will ensure that we achieve a score above 310+ in this beautiful optional.
Best wishes,
Naman Shrivastava
